1953年奔驰推出的其第一款三厢车-180（代号W120），在之后的日子奔驰相继发售了W110、W114\W115、W123等多款车型，但“E-class”这个名字却是从1993年6月中期改款之后才正式被官方作为行政级（Executive）轿车的名字使用。
1984年9月，奔驰在法兰克福车展上正式发布了W124四门轿车版本，其车身尺寸长宽高为4740mm×1740mm×1428mm，轴距为2800mm。在之后的7年里奔驰相继发布了旅行版-S124、双门Coupe版本-C124、六门8座加长版-V124（该版本相比普通版增加了增加了800mm的轴距）、敞篷版-A124；截止到1997年敞篷版停产，第一代奔驰E级的累计销量为2562143辆；

In 1953, Mercedes-Benz launched its first sedan -180 (W120), and in the following days Mercedes-Benz sold W110、W114\W115、W123 , but the "E-class" was officially fitted with the “Executive series cars” since June 1993 after the mid-term change.
In September 1984, Mercedes-Benz officially released the W124 four-door sedan at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with a body size of 4740mm×1740mm×1428mm, and wheelbase of 2800mm. Over the next seven years, Mercedes-Benz released Wagon-S124、Coupe-C124、Six doors\Eight seats -V124 (this version add 800mm wheelbase compared with the seden), and Convertible-A124 one by one. By the discounnect of the convertible version in 1997, the cumulative sales of the first generation of Mercedes-Benz E-Class was 2,562,143 units;
