乘着中国改革开放的春风，德日美车企纷纷进入中国，作为中国的近邻韩国车企自然也是不甘落后，但是因为此时韩国还未和中国建交所以一直没有机会进入到中国市场。但从1983年北京申办亚运会后，两国民间交往日趋加强。1990年，此时时中国并不富裕，当局为了解决办亚运会的资金不足的问题向社会各界募集捐助。韩国现代汽车、大宇汽车以及起亚汽车（此时现代和起亚还没有合并）立刻以非官方身份向北京政府捐赠了一批汽车， 其中有现代Excel、第二代现代索纳塔以及大宇赛手、大宇贵族等车型。该款车型有1.5l和2.0l两个排量，所有到中国销售的都是2.0l。

This model has two engine, 1.5L and 2.0L, all sold in China are 2.0L.
